And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
1 Kings 19:11-12
People often overdramatize the work of the Holy Spirit. Now obviously, the work of the Holy Spirit is incredible. He will “convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment” (John 16:8). He will “teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that [Jesus has] said to you” (John 14:26). And he will even be a “Helper, to be with you forever” (John 14:16).
These are all amazing promises. But they’re not super flashy. They’re not surrounded by fireworks and light shows and smoke machines.
What many people don’t realize is that the God of creation is also the God of the mundane. The Holy Spirit might not direct you to go live overseas in Syria and tell everyone about Jesus in the midst of violence and persecution.
But he might tell you to remember to put toilet paper in your next grocery order.
He might not tell you to run for president and alter your entire life trajectory.
But he might remind you to grab a card from Walgreens for that friend who’s currently in the hospital.
The list goes on and on, and there are countless examples of promptings from the Holy Spirit. But don’t let the enemy trick you into thinking that God only talks to you in big momentous occasions. Remember Elijah? He thought God would show up in a massive storm. Then he thought God might appear in an earthquake. But he didn’t.
He came in a low whisper.
The Holy Spirit will be whispering to you throughout the day, every day. Your job is just to be ready. Open your ears, open your heart, open your mind. And prepare to be led by the God of the grandiose, and the God of the mundane.
